Dealing with the risks Shortwave UVC (the 254nm stuff) works by literally ripping molecular bonds apart. That’s great for killing germs, but terrible for people. My advice? Don’t trust a manual switch. That’s a disaster waiting to happen. You need sensors that act as a kill-switch the second a cabinet door cracks open. We use fail-safe interlocks that cut power to the ballast instantly. No lag. No “almost.” Just off. The gear and the shielding The glass and housing you pick basically decide how much breathing room you have for errors. We love high-transmittance fused quartz because it lets the most light through, but it’s fragile. Really fragile. You’ve got to use protective sleeves or tempered glass shields. This keeps the lamp from shattering into your product and stops stray rays from leaking out onto the shop floor. Intensity vs. Exposure It’s tempting to just crank up the wattage to kill pathogens faster. But there’s a catch. Pushing the wattage increases the risk of ozone buildup and puts a lot of thermal stress on your sockets. If you’re chasing faster cycle times, make sure your cooling fans can actually keep up. If those lamp ends overheat, they’ll burn out early or—even worse—melt your sockets. Getting it installed and kept running When you’re wiring everything up, use shielded cabling. If you don’t, you’ll deal with EMI interference messing with your PLC, and that’s a headache you don’t need. And here is a big one:**Never guess the output based on the glow.**UVC is invisible. You can’t see it, but it’s still hitting you. Always use a UV-C rated meter to verify your irradiance levels. Oh, and wear your PPE. UV-rated face shields aren’t optional during maintenance.
